Bern: The Swiss Capital
Bern is the capital of Switzerland and most interesting cities, with the best-preserved medieval quarter of the country. It is situated on elevated ground along a bend in the river Aare. From the balconies of the city, which looks onto the river and the peaks of the Alps in the distance.
The city was founded in the late twelfth century, the Duke of Zahringen, who allegedly gave the name of the first animal, a bear, killed in the forests that once occupied the area.
The bear has since become the emblem of the city. Most of the center of Bern, with its elegant Renaissance house and covered galleries, dating from the XVI and XVII. The city is since 1848 the capital of the Confederacy. The giant Bundeshaus is home to the Swiss parliament and the building is open for public visit.
At the end of the main market places of Bern, and Bundesplatz Berenplatz. These places also reported hosting the annual market of onion, which is mounted on the fourth Monday of November, when we celebrate the local harvest onions.
The old town in the heart of Bern, has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO, and is famous for its arcaded streets. The main streets are all lined with enticing shops, galleries and cafes.
The famous clock tower rises at the mouth of Kramgasse in Marrktgasse. The clock dates back to 1530 and hourly chimes accompany a series of mechanical figures, including bears, a buffoon and a rooster.
