Athens Archaeological Museum
The Athens National Archaeological Museum opened its doors in 1891, bringing together a collection previously scattered throughout the city.
New wings were added in 1939, and during World War II was buried and scattered his valuable collection to protect it from possible damage.
The museum reopened in 1946, but has needed over 50 years of reform and reorganisation to be worthy of your valuable collection. The combination of Mycenaean gold and a unique set of ceramic sculpture and jewellery will no doubt place among the best museums in the world. Should plan a visit to the museum with time and select what you want to see, because it is better not to try to cover everything in one visit.
The exhibition can be divided into seven main sections: Neolithic art and Cycladic, Mycenaean art, sculpture, geometric, archaic, Hellenistic and Roman sculpture, collections of ceramics and fresh Thira. There are also several smaller collections, which also worthwhile, among which include a number of jewels and the Egyptian section.
Among the most notable pieces and visited the museum highlights found in a circular burial mound in the city of Maecenas, and in particular the gold mask of Agamemnon.
Are also essential Kouroi archaic statues and the magnificent collections of classical and Hellenistic statues that are unmatched. Two of the most important bronzes that can be admired are the little horse with rider and Poseidon.
