The Mystery of The Towers of Meteora

The mystery of the towers of Meteora

The extraordinary nature of the limestone towers of Meteora (or high rocks) were formed by sea erosion Thessaly covering some 30 million years.

Huge columns of rock retreat served for the first time in 985, when a hermit named Barnabas settled in a cave there.

A Neilos mid-fourteenth century, a small church erected here, and some years later, in 13382, the monk Athanasios founded one of the pinnacles Megalo Meteoro Monastery. This was followed by 23 monasteries, but by the end of the eighteenth century many were already in ruins.

In the 1920 stairs were carved in the rock walls to improve access to the remaining six monasteries.

Although it is unknown how the hermits reached the tops of these rocks, vertical walls may be placed pins in the rock and building materials rise up to the summits.

Another theory is that it flew kites on the heights with ropes attached to which would be the first rope ladders in history. How the scales were anchored in the rock still remains a mystery.
