Malaysia: Georgetown

Georgetown, Malaysia

Just recently I discovered the secrets of Georgetown, a city that seems to combine an eclectic past, present and future of Malaysia. Here we are with colonial mansions, ultra-modern buildings and a culture that knows how to value a rich past.

Georgetown is one of the largest cities in Malaysia, and one of the most important. Located on the island of Penang, was considered a long time, but of the rest of the country as a kind of island-state.

The centre of the city of Georgetown is considered World Heritage by UNESCO. This is due to the architectural richness of the city that reflects its multicultural history, particularly the influence of China, in India too, after the British, among others. Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures.

Penang is an island with many attractions, beaches, a city of intense rhythm, mountains, sea and fabulous views of interesting temples to visit. It is also one of the best places in Malaysia to explore the culinary fusion that characterizes this country.

What to do in Georgetown?

The strong Cornwallis, one of the few remnants of the early founding of the city in 1786 by Francis Light. It is interesting to see but very few traces left of it (a wall that extends from its former location.)

In the area around the fort are older homes, considered today as an architectural gem.

Penang Hill, the highest point of the island can be reached by cable car and enjoy the incredible views.

Temples: Buddhist temples and mosques both are especially attractive on the island and allow us to discover more of the mixture of religions in Malaysia.

Eat and eat: Penang is famous for its excellent cuisine and as an example of the best of Malaysian cuisine.
